In 1941, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt met with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill just before the United States entered World War II. That same year, Gainfield Elementary School was built to replace Bullet Hill School. In 1967, the Vietnam War was a topic of national debate, the Beatles were at the height of their cultural influence, and Pomperaug Elementary School opened.
